Prep Water Polo by Joe Zavala

The Ashland High boys water polo team opened its Southern League season with three lopsided road victories over the weekend.

The Grizzlies trounced Cottage Grove 12-5, North Eugene 12-8 and Marist 12-4 to improve to 5-1 overall.

The Ashland girls also raced out to a fast start in league play, beating Cottage Grove 11-5, North Eugene 6-3 and Marist 11-4 to improve to 4-0 overall.

Wynn Michael provided a big chunk of the offense for the Grizz boys. He scored nine goals in the three league games and three more in a non-conference loss to South Eugene. Forrest Kollar added seven goals combined against North Eugene and Marist and four steals against Cottage Grove, and Jake Gavin scored three goals against Cottage Grove and two against Marist. Also for Ashland, Lucas Opgenorth scored five goals against North Eugene.

The Ashland girls were led by Smith Freeman and goalkeeper Carlie Santee. Freeman scored 13 goals in the three league games and five more in a non-conference win over Sheldon, while Santee blocked 63 shots in SL play.

Kalli Walker and Sarah Kasiah also stepped up for the Grizz girls. Walker scored four goals against Marist and three, to go with three steals, against Cottage Grove, while Kasiah notched two goals and five steals against North Eugene, five goals against Sheldon and two goals against Marist.

The Ashland boys will compete in the Wood Creek Invitational in Roseville, Calif., this weekend, while the girls are off until Oct. 8, when they'll host Medford.
